Love Letters to a Coal Miner’s Daughter

Love Letters to a Coal Miner’s Daughter

The Nathan Jones and the Scott Taylor families were close neighbors in the coal camp of Monitor # 3 (Wilkinson) in Logan County West Virginia. Elizabeth Taylor and Johnny Jones were childhood sweethearts.  Through these letters you will notice interaction between the two families — especially between Elizabeth and Johnny

The following letter and notes between Johnny George Jones and Elizabeth Taylor  were  transcribed by the nephew of Elizabeth Taylor, Robert E. McCormack being completed on June 10, 2007.  An attempt to be true to spelling and punctuation of writers was attempted. The period covered is from August 4, 1927 to June 6 1929. .

.     We have a gap of several years between the last letter of June of 1929 (Elizabeth and Johnny were actually married that month  -hence no need to write letters after that –)  and Johnny’s death at the age of 26 in 1937

 Dear Johnny.

Just a few lines in answer to your letter was glad to hear from you again.

Virginia was tickled to death with her long letter.  Ha! Ha! It took her so long to read it.

Well I guess we will start home Saturday night at eleven something.  We will be in Huntington around noon.  We will just have to wait about an hour in Cincinnati and believe me I am thankful that we do not have to wait any longer.

I just bet it rains don’t you?

Well if it does you can meet us in Logan any way.

If you all come to Huntington you will have to meet the train from Cincinnati.  I don’t know exactly what time it arrives in Huntington.  I forgot to ask Bijah this morning.

We were planning on taking our lunch out today on a picnic and of course it is “raining”  Isn’t it wonderful (sometimes)”

We are going out to one of Elizabeth’s cousins at the other side of Chicago tomorrow.  It is about a two hours ride each way.  As I am in a hurry to get this off on the mail I will close.  Hoping to see you soon

 Dearest and Only One

I am writin this on paper to you so if I cant get to tell you you will No.  What I was studying about so much and wouldn’t tell you was that I wanted you to marry me and was afraid to ask you afraid you would say no and that was what I dreamed about and wouldn’t tell you. And what I wished so much ws that you would say yes and that we would live happy all the rest of our lifs  for I love you with all my heart.

If I never get to see you again come kiss the one that loves you with all my heart and always remember that I loved your more than I did any body else on earth and hope you love me to and when you are with another remember me and remember you wont find no one like me nor will treat you like I have. So god luck and god bless you.  I am leavin this world because I didn’t think I could get you.

 Good by sweetheart forever.

 Yours,
